The Importance of Having a Full-Scale Print of your Custom Cart Concept

Posted by Brittany Beckmann on March 10, 2017

How many times have you heard of a project making it almost all the way to production, and it wasn't until the production-grade prototype that someone realized the medical cart was too big? Imagine the stress involved in fixing that problem—going back to engineering and brainstorming how to condense the footprint—not to mention all the rescheduling and prolonging the lead time.

It would be a nightmare!

At HUI, we like to avoid stressful situations whenever possible, so we highly encourage investing in a full-scale print of your custom medical cart early in the project.

What are the benefits of having a full-scale print of my custom medical cart?

Think of your full-scale print as a cost effective prototype. Most full-scale prints cost around $100 but think of the advantages.

  1. If your cart is too big, you can address the matter right away without wasting money on tooling, time, sheet metal, hardware or manufacturing.
  2. Having a full-scale print will give you an opppotunity to judge the aesthetics. Sometimes monitor screens make carts look thinner and taller than in reality.
  3. In some cases, you might have another medical cart on hand with which to compare your full-scale print.
  4. You can address any relevant human factors. Are the drawers or shelves in optimal positions? Is the keyboard at a nice height? Will your product fit through door frames? What visibility will someone have while transporting this cart? Are the handles in an ergonomically optimal position? Will any equipment on the cart be knocked off by a door frame or pose as a potential hazard?

Investing in a full-scale print will save you time and money in the long run. Not only will you be able to address potential issues sooner, but you won’t have to worry about wasting material, time or money.

At HUI, we have an experienced team of engineers who primarily work with custom medical carts. Contact us today, and we’ll get your project underway.
